Guanacaste is a province of Costa Rica in the far west of the country, which comprises most of the territory that was annexed to the country on July 25, 1824.
For its size is the second largest province of the country, but also the least populated. Bordered on the north by the Republic of Nicaragua, on the east by Alajuela, Puntarenas and the south west by the Pacific Ocean. Its head is Liberia, located 281 kilometers from San Jose.
Guanacaste is the name of the country's national tree. Its terrain is flat, Border to Alajuela and some upland areas in the Nicoya Peninsula. In its political division presents 11 cantons. The economic potential of Guanacaste lies in the livestock and tourism, as its beaches are very attractive and hot weather is ideal. In Liberia is the second international airport of Costa Rica, called Daniel Oduber International Airport.
The beaches of Guanacaste, besides being the scene of extraordinary sunsets, are very popular in Costa Rica, including Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Langosta and Avellanas among others.
