Commonly mistaken to be the same as San Gerardo de Dota, San Gerardo de Rivas is really a smaller, much quieter town located in the Talamanca Mountains in the South Central region of Costa Rica. Situated about 12 miles from San Isidro de General, it will take you about 3 hours to get here from San Jose downtown. Do note that a 4x4 vehicle is necessary to drive up, especially during the rainy season.
A small village of about 400 people, San Gerardo de Rivas has really become popular in the last couple of years as it is used as a stopping point for those who plan to visit the Chirripo National Park (Costa Rica’s highest peak). However, visitors have come to realize the beauty within the area, which is the main reason why San Gerardo de Rivas has become a more popular spot. Not only is the town popular because of its well-kept traditions, but also because of its endless outdoor activities which you can explore.
San Gerardo de Rivas is really the ultimate adventure par for any outdoor junkie. It really doesn’t matter whether you like the adrenaline rush or simply wish to get a dose of nature’s peacefulness, this is the place to be! The most common activities include hiking, mountain biking and rappelling.
