Located in the central valley you can find one of the most beautiful and painteresque small towns in the country, charming little Turrialba. Being part of the Cartago province has its benefits, mainly because of its scenic views of the countryside which make it a unique experience.
Turrialba is located about 60 km from San Jose, so it will take you about 1-2 hours depending on the traffic. Streets are all in great conditions so you can easily take any sort of car. Declared as a City of National Archeological Interest, Turrialba was originally developed due to the railroad to the Caribbean. This makes the town especially unique as it has different architecture and feeling than the rest.
Both Turrialba as well as Cartago are known for having some of the most extreme and incredible attractions and activities to take part on. You can do everything from white-water rafting to hiking some pre-Colombian ruins. But probably the coolest thing is the Turrialba National Park where you can find the Turrialba Volcano.
Turrialba volcano is one of the biggest and most gorgeously dense in the country. Its last mayor eruption was back in 1866, but it has been recently active in the last couple of years. Recently, the Volcano had a series of small eruptions which released gasses and ash throughout the central valley, causing the National park to close its doors until activity ceased. Visiting this magnificent volcano is most definitely a must due to the many hiking trails and stunning panoramic views.
Another great attraction when in Turrialba is most definitely the dozens of rafting tours you can go on. White water rafting is a great way to get your adrenaline pumping and have a great adventure close to the city. You can either raft through the Pacuare or the Reventazon river as both have various intensity levels for beginners, average and experienced groups.
Although the road to Turrialba is very well preserved, if you are planning to drive to the National Park or even through its dense forests, we recommend you at least take a 4x4 car.
