Declared one of Costa Rica’s Seven Natural Wonders. Monteverde is one of the most stunning, popular and naturally rich destinations in the country. It was also named one of the world’s “14 Places to remember before it disappears” according to Newsweek. Although it is quite a long drive away from the city (around 4 hours), it is absolutely worthwhile to visit!
Monteverde is a small community in Puntarenas, and it is host to many reserved including the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It’s main attraction is obviously the incredible richness and beauty of its flora and fauna. However there are plenty of other activities you can take part of depending of your likes and interests. Most attractions have recently been established in the last 5 years, always keeping in mind the preservation and and protection of the area and its reserves.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is an 11 hectare area which protects more than 3000 species of birds, butterflies, mammals and plants. Its foliage is absolutely jaw-dropping as it is so dense and lively. Its wildlife if also amazing as it includes everything from thousands of insects and birds, to tapirs, quetzals and even jaguars.
Once you amaze yourself with the actual reserve and its natural wonder, you will probably want to look for something to do within the reserve. There are plenty of activities you can take part in:
If you are not afraid of the heights, then Zip lining and Suspension bridges should be your number one choice. Both will give you a great opportunity to view the reserve and all its vivacity from the treetops. This one you definitely cant miss!
If heights isn’t for you, then maybe coffee is? At Monteverde you can take part of the Monteverde Coffee tour and visit the coffee plantations in near by communities. You will be guided through the process it takes to roast and package the coffee. And yes… you will be to drink Monteverde’s coffee through the whole tour!
Looking for something a little more adventurous? Grab a bike and hit the mountain trails which cross right through the forests. You can even ride all the way to the San Luis Waterfall! An impressive 300-meter waterfall where you can enjoy a cold natural shower after a magnificent bike ride!
