There is no better place to get a true feeling of the Costa Rican culture and people, than the lovely Cerro Dragon! Known as well by the name “Cerro Caraigres”, this incredible mountain is home to some of the best-kept ‘tico’ traditions for you to enjoy!
Located in Aserri, San Jose; the Cerro Dragon is really a tiny community made up of about 300 people. Although the town itself is quite small and rural, it has some of the warmest and friendliest people you could ever meet! Getting here is quite easy as it is only about 2 hours away from the city, however a 4x4 vehicle is necessary.
Given the area’s gorgeous flora and fauna, Cerro Dragon offers so many unique activities to its visitors. The mountain itself is a protected area of about 4000 hectares and its highest peak has an elevation of 2506 meters. If you stand on the very top on a clear day, you are even able to see as far as the Pacific Ocean – absolutely mesmerizing!
At Cerro Dragon you can choose between cultural tours which will show you all of the area’s traditions. Or if you are more into adventure, you can also choose to hike two different routes.
If you would rather get to know Costa Rica and its locals, you can choose to go on the cultural tour which will take you through town as well as into a cute tico estate or ‘finca’.
This is an amazing choice, as it will really give you a chance to discover many of the Costa Rican traditions. You will do everything from learning about coffee plantations and traditional games, to farming and even how to milk cows! – That sounds like fun!
The tour will include all of the day’s meals as well as snacks and an afternoon coffee.
If you are looking for something a bit more adventurous, you can also choose from two different hikes. Option number one is more of a ‘family’ hike, where you will walk up to a lookout at the Cerro Buena Vista. You can hike its various trails and even spend the night camping under the Costa Rican sky!
If you are looking for something a bit more challenging, then hiking up the actual Cerro Dragon is for you! Although the hike is a bit long (16 kilometers), it is so worth it! Hiking up Cerro Dragon will give you the most gorgeous scenic views while getting some fresh mountain air!
